Fantod's Tasty Ghiblits
Yoshifumi Kondo: Anne of Green Gables, Whisper of

   Home/Change Series

Animator-artist Yoshifumi Kondo [1950-1998] worked with both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata at several animation houses before Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki considered Kondo?s animation the finest, second only to his. But Kondo?s talent was most fully utilized working under Takahata, who, not being an artist himself, believed that Kondo?s skill, artistry and feeling best brought his own ideas to life. Takahata?s Anne of Green Gables [1979] while at Nippon Animation is an excellent example. At Ghibli, Takahata and Kondo were close collaborators for Graveyard of the Fireflies, Pom Poko and Only Yesterday. Kondo directed his first feature film Whisper of the Heart in 1995, a manga originally adapted by Miyazaki. But as 1997 drew to a close, after work on Princess Mononoke was complete, Kondo collapsed at work. He was admitted to a Tokyo hospital, as he had several times before, for treatment of a chronic, pneumonia-like affliction. During recovery, Kondo suffered an aneurysm, and died on January 21, 1998. Read translations of eulogies given by both Miyazaki and Takahata delivered at Kondo?s funeral service on the 23rd of January. He was 47 years old.
